Fernie is a rustic, homely mountain town with enough mountain bike trails to keep anyone occupied for days.
The humble charm of the various networks is a reflection of the local spirit, shared with its many unique small businesses. Fernie is well worth a trip on its own, and should be a major stop if you’re passing through the area.
My favourite network is the enduro style Mount Fernie. Punchy climbs are rewarded with sweeping views of the valley and sustained, well executed roller coaster rides to the bottom.
For a solid enduro loop try Stove Trail – Mushroom Head – Lactic Ridge over to Slunt and then Brokeback Ridge all the way to the bottom. Then, hop on Lazy Lizard and head up to Project 9: an exciting downhill with various different trail options on the descent.
If cross-country is more your style, the Ridgemount and Montane networks on the opposite side of town provide endless combinations and variety.
For something in between, Swine Flu is a local classic and easy to access off Hwy 3.
If you’re up for a challenge, check out Fernie Brewing’s Trail to Ale: Climb Project 9, Hyperventilation, and Swine Flu within 24 hours and get rewarded with free beer and a sticker!
